402 days in Auschwitz – May 2, 1943 The occupancy level of the Women’s Camp is 19,070

It was on this day for the next 60 years that her husband would present her with a bouquet of red and white carnations (the color of the Polish flag) to celebrate the anniversary of her freedom.

Today we have placed a bouquet on their graves to honor their love and remember the importance of freedom for all people.

Yom Hashoah – April 7 1943 – 70 Yrs Ago Today in Auschwitz… a Polish Gypsy escaped

“Stania Ciuron, was born on 27 August 1909, and escaped from Auschwitz 70 years ago on this day. Her fate is unknown, but she was never captured. She had been delivered to Auschwitz on 12 Feb 1943, before the Gypsy Family Camp was set up.” (Source: Czech 371)

Also 70 years ago, two Jews from Darmstadt, Piere Braunschweig and Paul Guarien, were delivered to Auschwitz after their escape from Sobibor on 26 March 1942.

We spent 11+ hours on trains, and went through 3 countries to reach our destination. This video shows you all of the moments: from pensive poetics to bad coffee, there is even an excerpt from the book, Rena’s Promise, included. All in all, it was another one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

On the Eve of the First Transport to Auschwitz

Every year, in Poprad, Slovakia, there are offerings made to the memories of those girls. We walk are looking for some remnant of those young women and the Jews of Poprad and discover something far more special, that we never expected.
